Tucked along the rugged cliffs of California's Big Sur coastline, Garrapata Beach offers a kind of wild, untamed beauty that feels made for love stories written by the sea. With windswept hair, salt-kissed skin, and the sound of crashing waves as their vows' only witness, this couple chose intimacy over tradition--and found magic in the raw simplicity of nature.
This isn't just an elopement--it's a celebration of freedom, of love unbound by rules, and of the quiet moments that matter most. Join us as we step into this wind-kissed day where the sea met the sky, and two hearts said yes beneath a horizon painted with golden light.
I had the pleasure of interviewing the photographer, Julia Mina Photography about the beautiful day. Keep scrolling to read more.
The Vision
With over 12 years of photographing weddings and elopements, I've learned that thoughtful preparation is key to creating an incredible experience. As an elopement photographer, I do more than document--I guide and support my couples through every step, from scouting locations and recommending vendors to preparing for weather and terrain. For Ayumi and Joseph, it was important to include family in their ceremony while also carving out intentional private time. I helped weave both elements into their timeline--beginning the day with a quiet morning together at the stunning Villa Mara Carmel for getting ready and portraits, before heading out for their intimate ceremony with loved ones. This balance allowed them to have the best of both worlds, and gave me space to capture their day in an authentic, creative way.

The Details
I was especially excited to photograph their morning at Villa Mara Carmel. The architecture and light in the space created such a romantic, timeless backdrop for their getting ready moments and portraits. It perfectly reflected the relaxed yet elegant feel they envisioned for their day.

Memorable Moments
The wind along the coast could have felt overwhelming, but instead Ayumi and Joseph fully embraced it. I loved how they leaned into the weather--it added so much movement, emotion, and atmosphere to their photos. Beyond that, the pace of the day stood out to me. Nothing felt rushed. They were able to be fully present with each other, which is exactly what an elopement should be.
How was this wedding unique?
What made their elopement so unique was how they chose to close the day. After being on the coast, they returned to Villa Mara and exchanged private vows by the fireplace. It was intimate, emotional, and such a beautiful contrast to the wild energy of the ocean earlier that day--a perfect reflection of their story.
The Love Story
Their design was intentionally simple, allowing the focus to remain on the experience and their connection. It wasn't about extravagant details, but about crafting a day that felt true to them--centered on love, presence, and meaningful moments together.
The Challenges
The biggest challenge was the chilly, windy coastal weather. We took breaks to warm up throughout the day, but ultimately the wind became one of the most beautiful parts of the story. It gave the photos an incredible sense of movement and atmosphere that we couldn't have planned for--and it perfectly captured the raw, adventurous spirit of their elopement.
